This past year the Hannibal Courier Post awarded us the ‘People’s Choice Award 2015‘ for the Best B&B in the Hannibal area.
Now we turn around and now the Thrillist website awards us with the “Coolest Place to Stay in the State of Missouri.” Two very well received accolades we are honored to have been given. Thanks for the votes Hannibalians and thanks Thrillist’s writer Matt Meltzer for chosing us alongside several well deserving places.
“So, you take the house that’s pretty much the model for every haunted house movie exterior in history, and then put it on a remote 36 acres in a place called HANNIBAL? That is pure horror genius, and undoubtedly why this Victorian-era mansion is routinely rated the best B&B in Missouri. It’s got eight rooms and three cottages, all done up in antique furniture for that true Merchant Ivory feel. A welcome contrast to the Wes Craven-feeling exterior.” ~Matt Meltzer
“Mark Twain loved Garth Mansion, which was named after the owner and the author’s childhood friend, John Garth. He returned to Hannibal regularly to visit his friend, and this family-run hotel is just a few metres from the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum. It’s possible to stay in the room Twain stayed in, and the hotel’s rooms are filled with the author’s books.” ~MSN Travel, Hotels for Literary Lovers, March 2014

Since we are just outside the city limits and in wonderful Ralls County, our sales tax here at the Garth are much lower than the local area. Our tax rate here is 6.75% whereas in town you will pay just a tad under 15%. There are advantages to living out in the county. Now the city has asked us to inquire with our guests if they would like to pay a voluntary bed tax of 6%. If you would like to, just let us know; we will add that on to your bill and donate the money to the city. To date we have had one gentleman running for office who donated $1, so you never know.
